Top Too Long? Easy Styling and Hemming Fixes

If your top is too long, first check where the hem falls when you stand naturally. A hem that sits a little below your hips may just need styling, while one that covers most of your thighs may need hemming. Try the top with the pants or skirt you plan to wear so you can judge the proportions of the full outfit.

A front tuck is a quick way to shorten the look of a top without changing it. Tuck a small section at the center front into your waistband, then loosen it slightly so the fabric drapes rather than pulls. For a full tuck, smooth the fabric around your waist before fastening your pants to reduce bunching.

A narrow fold under the hem can work for a casual outfit, especially if the fabric holds its shape. You can also secure a folded hem with removable fashion tape; test the tape on an inconspicuous spot first, particularly with silk or other delicate materials. A side knot is another option for a soft knit top with enough extra length to tie comfortably.
Long tops often pair well with slimmer bottoms because the difference in shape gives the outfit definition. Try a long button-down open over a fitted tee, or wear a tunic-length top with leggings when the fabric provides the coverage you want. If the top feels too voluminous, add a belt at your natural waist rather than tightening it across your hips.
Fold the hem inward and secure it with removable fashion tape, or tuck the top into your waistband. A side knot can also shorten the appearance of a soft, roomy knit.
Wear it open as a lightweight layer, tuck it in, or belt it for shape. If the shirt overwhelms your frame, shortening the hem may make it easier to wear.
Choose pants with a comfortable waistband, tuck the shirt in evenly, then gently pull a little fabric loose for movement. A partial front tuck is another option if a full tuck creates too much bulk.
